Check out the attached thumbnail below, this is how most podcast hosts determine thier "real time" numbers.
When Barry got started it was a real bitch trying to get real numbers since the technology, though it was available, wasnt accessible in a uswer friendly format to the end user, thus having to mess with shit like scripts and programs that even then still didnt give u a real #.
But recently alot of new scrpits and apps have come out that I think are pretty good. And if anyone is thinking of doing a podcast seriously, you kind of depend on the numbers you get back to see if youre losing or gaining listeners.
I dont know how Barry or Nicholaus determine how big thier listening audince is, but I use Site Analytics through my GoDaddy hosting account. I beleive most server/hosts have this feature, either as a package or as an additional feature to your plan.
Whats cool about GoDaddy is that it will give you a live and pretty accurate request count of how many times downloadable files have been accessed.
Of course this would be sloppy as hell if it just counted ANY hits, but this script/program only counts unique listens per file, meaning if it was accessed by the same IP address more than once it would only show as one count. That is unless youre using a Monstar Proxy, err 3rd Party Server Proxy to change your IP address, or a DHCP server.
The server counts downloads and streams as "requests", and iTunes also factors into the equation.
But this sounds like fun, and if everyone else is down (Nicholaus, Barry, Gunbitch) I have no problem showing everyone what kinda numbers my show is doing if you guys are. I have fun doing it and even if only 20 people were listening I'd probably still do it.
Bropacylpse recently invited me to come on the PUA Hate show so we can have a smoke off, looking forward to that shit man hahaaa. And Nicholaus, thanks for being awesome behind the scenes and following up with me. Finding work is a bitch.
But anyways, here's my numbers for the past few episodes, most I did was Ep 12 at 2600+ downloads:
(btw, the PUA Hate Episode I did with you guys got 600 listens through my server, and I think 100 more off the torrent sites like ThePlace.bz and Bitseduce:

Whoa, you guys seem concerned with numbers and stuff...
This video currently has 28470887 views, no clue what those numbers mean but if I could only figure out, on a real level.

The hiphop sites i used to go to. Would anylise the weekly soundscans (album charts) and go into long discussions because eminem did 600k and this guy did 450k his first week and this guy 134k, those people are all dead now, dont end up like those people.

Fair enough, you're posting actual proof of how many listeners you have to back up what you say.
The download counters on podcastlol count how many times an episode have been downloaded from unique IP addresses. If someone downloads twice from the same IP, it still only counts it once.
I'm a big believer in openness and transparency, so I'm leary of anyone who doesn't openly show their numbers out in the open for everyone to see. Openly showing everything gives the audience a true feel for how big of a group they are a part of.
The only way openly showing real download numbers can hurt somebody, is if they're lying about what the numbers are.
